The U.S. has provided approximately $10 million in other pandemic-related assistance to bolster Kosovo’s pandemic response.
Yesterday the United States donated an additional 515,970 lifesaving, safe, and highly effective Pfizer vaccine doses to Kosovo. Including the prior two shipments in August and September 2021, the United States people have donated over 1,054,170 doses to protect Kosovans, representing the largest COVID-19 vaccine donation by any country or organization to Kosovo.
“Vaccines remain the world’s strongest defense against COVID-19 and its devastating impacts. High vaccination rates mean low rates of hospitalizations and fewer deaths. Please do your part: get vaccinated, wash your hands, and wear a mask. It takes all of us working together to fight this global pandemic and win,” said U.S. Ambassador to Kosovo Jeff Hovenier.
Because no country can defeat COVID-19 alone, President Biden has committed the United States to share over 1.2 billion vaccine doses with countries around the world.
“The United States will be the world’s arsenal of vaccines in our shared fight against this virus,” President Biden said in a June 3, 2021, statement. “We will continue to do all we can to build a world that is safer and more secure against the threat of infectious disease.”
In addition to vaccines, the United States remains the largest bilateral donor to Kosovo’s health system to bolster its COVID response. Since the start of the pandemic, the United States has provided approximately $10 million in additional pandemic-related support to slow the spread, care for the affected, and equip Kosovan schools, medical facilities, families and communities across its 38 municipalities with the tools needed to fight back against COVID-19.
U.S. donated vaccines were delivered through the COVAX Advance Market Commitment (COVAX AMC) mechanism, a global initiative to support equitable access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines. Through its $4 billion donation to COVAX, the United States is the world’s largest donor for equitable global COVID-19 vaccine access. COVAX is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations (CEPI), Gavi – the Vaccine Alliance, and the World Health Organization (WHO), with UNICEF as a key delivery partner.
