Jahjaga: The National Council for Survivors of Sexual Violence, among the greatest achievements

Mar 15, 2018

Former Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga values the formation of the National Council for Survivors of Sexual Violence during the War as one of her greatest achievements during her term as president.

She stated this during a meeting on Wednesday at the premises of KosovaLive media organization, where she spoke in front of 30 girls about the challenges of serving as the first woman president.

During the conversation with the girls, most of which are part of the activities and projects carried out by KosovaLive, members of Global Girl Media Kosova, participants in the Eko-Storytelling-Girls Project, Self-Stories and WikiGap, she also talked about her activity in the emancipation of women during and after her mandate.

“It has been a spiritual relief for me after listening to the personal experiences of women who have experienced rape in the cruelest ways, such as breast cutting, experiencing cigarette being put out on their bodies, and the patience of the cuttings from  abusers who have left body marks to them, from the injuries that were not treated and healed “said Jahjaga, referring to the formation of the National Council for Survivors of Sexual Violence.

The President discussed with the girls her experiences with the media and the importance of research and reporting with sensitivity. She talked about real-life scenarios when the media discussed outfits, looks, and her accessories, shifting her attention and losing the opportunity to inform the public about important political discussions.

“As a woman, you face more prejudice than men. For that you have to fight with more and more persistence, “said former Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga.
