“Talks Unrestricted”, the launching event for #WikiGap

Mar 1, 2018

On the 23rd of February director of development at Kosovalive Annea Hapciu was part of “Talks Unrestricted”, a series of freestyle discussion supported by the Swedish Embassy in Prishtina. The discussion’s purpose was to serve as a space for
deliberations on various topics that may influence country developments and societal transformations. The topic for this event was “Agency in the digital age”.

“Talks Unrestricted” was the launching event for the Wiki Gap Edit-A-Thon, which will be held on the 7th and 8th of March in many countries around the world.

#WikiGap is an event during which people around the world will gather to add more content to Wikipedia about women figures, experts and role models in various fields. On 8 March – International Women’s Day – the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Swedish embassies will host simultaneous events in more than 40 countries, from Sweden to Indonesia, Egypt and Colombia. A worldwide action will take place 8 March 2018, but the campaign can be performed at other times as well.

Wikipedia is the world’s largest online and user-generated encyclopedia. Knowledge is power, and Wikipedia has the potential to colour our view of the world. But there is great imbalance between men and women on the website, like in society at large.

Ninety per cent of those who add content to Wikipedia are men. There are four times more articles about men than women. The figures vary regionally, but no matter how you look at it, the picture is clear: the information about women is less extensive than that about men. Regardless of which language version of Wikipedia you read. We want to change this.
