GIRL BE HEARD PROJECT OVERVIEW

Girl Be Heard project funded by U.S. Department of State Global Womenand Security Peace(GWPS) Initiativeis an 18 month effort that started being implemented in October 1, 2016 and will last till March 30, 2018. The project aims to empower young Kosovo girls with opportunities to make their voices heard and contribute, as equal partners in building a democratic society and peace, and prevention of conflict.The project develops the sense that through active work, dedication and meritocracy, girls can also advance in Kosovo society. The project also contributes to the decrease of the unemployment rate among vulnerable groups, as 30 university girls’ ages 18-24 directly benefit from a part-time engagement, receiving a monthly stipend for producing news stories and short videos relating to life in Kosovo that aim to reach international audiences.

In the years following the Kosovo conflict in 1999 and even following the April 2013 dialogue agreement, reporting by Kosovar media about Serbia, and vice-versa, has been limited to strictly political themes, almost exclusively focused on status negotiations, conflict, and ethnic tensions. There has been scant coverage about the everyday struggles of average citizens in both countries, particularly regarding the issues that matter most, including challenges in education, health care, and economic growth.

Miami University Study Abroad and Internship Program at KosovaLive has commenced its 7th year

This 8-week summer program, located in the capital city of Kosovo, Prishtina, gives American students a chance to learn and explore Kosovo and the countries in the Western Balkans. Students will enroll in two classes “The Journalist in a Democracy” and “Peace Building in the Balkans”. They will be taking classes and interning at KosovaLive Organization, producing stories for KosovaLive360, while also meeting with local leaders.
