Youth are leaving Kamenica due to lack of perspective

Lipjan`s youth see migration as a solution for lack of employment
There are around 57,600 inhabitants in Lipjan, of them 8,073 are employed in all sectors, according to the latest statistics of the public organization for initiatives and local support (POLIS). Whereas, according to the statistics of the municipality done by the Institute for Advanced Studies GAP in 2016, the overall number of the employees in the public sector was 1,506, whereas the number of people recorded as unemployed was 9,668.
With ideas and creativity, through self-employment, towards dreams
“We could not find bags that we liked, thus we came up with the idea of creating one of our own. We made that bag with the help of some seamstresses that were members of our family and we liked our first product. We received positive comments from our friends and relatives. Thus we came up with the idea of creating our brand,” says this couple from Prishtina.

Time Maraj, who has been working as a teacher for 42 years in “Hysni Zajmi” primary school in Vrellë, a village of Istog, says that she chose this profession by her own will.
There is an increased awareness for the consumption of local products
Arjeta Selimi from Obiliq says that she regularly consumes local products.
“To be honest, we consume several different products and we often do not know their origin. Personally, I prefer local products, since I have more trust in their quality and freshness. If I do not find a local product, I am forced to get another product,” Selimi says.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Loud shouts in deaf ears
“My father beat me several times before I got married. As many other girls I saw violence as something normal, so he was my parent and could beat me if I made any mistake. But, violence continued by my husband also… The unstable economic conditions were the main cause of violence. Our children were young and they did not understand anything, but now they are grown up and they protect me any time I have conflicts with my husband, but now he has started to change as well. Now that both of us work, we have better conditions and less conflicts,” she explains.
The combination of war traumas and poverty are leading causes of the increasing number of suicides
Based on age groups, the most suicides were committed by people aged 21-50, according to the Information Office of the Kosovo Police. The age group of individuals who attempted suicide was 21-30 years-old

“I gave up Christianity because we were attacked by some self-declared Muslims, and I gave up Islam because I was not convinced by it. I determined my position regarding religion through a long process of reading religion history and philosophy and of course by reading religious books,” he says.

There are no exact data how many people are employed in the private sector in the last years. But according to the data of the municipality, in 2012, out of 8,699 individuals who gained employment, only 2,078 were women.
“iEngage & iWrite” – Training about terrorism in Kosovo
During June, a team of participants within the iEngage&iWrite project are working on the topic of Kosovo’s security and risk from internal and external terrorism. Teuta Avdimetaj, a policy and security researcher, held a presentation about Kosovo’s susceptibility from internal and external terrorism. She also shared tactics on how to be cautious in the manner of reporting about terrorism, and evaluating sources of information and news about terrorism.

“Critical Media Literacy” in Prizren: Increasing awareness about identifying, evaluating and analyzing information
We held a workshop in Media Education with teachers. The workshop aims to equip teachers with methodologies, through which they can challenge their students to identify, manage, report and eliminate fake news. With the development of technology it is becoming everyday more challenging to evaluate news and information and through these workshops we are trying to prepare teachers to become more effective in teaching students on how to protect themselves from desinformation.

During June, a team of our participating girls from the iEngage&iWrite program are going to work in the creation of an article and video for the economic security in Kosovo and its dependence for economic support from other countries. Nora Jusufi, from the GAP Institute, held a presentation about Kosovo’s economic situation, economic indicators, gender breakdown in the economy and informed participant where they can identify additional primary and secondary sources for correct reporting.
